Guide for setting up google my business

Setting up Google My Business is now an essential and free part of helping to improve local SEO for your business. If you’re based in Bournemouth, Poole or Dorset I can help with setting up Google My Business for you.

You will need to create a Google account or log in to your existing account to get started. You’ll also need to ensure you have all your business information available including a description, logo and some relevant images.

It’s important to ensure all your business information is consistent across any other business listings, directories and your website as this provides confidence for your customers and Google.

In this article, I am going to go over some of the basics to get you set up and started.

1. Create or log in to Google Account

If you already have a Google account you can log in, if not then set one up at this point.

Once you’re logged in head to – google.com/business

2. Enter your business name and Details

Next, enter your business name. You’ll see that Google start to provide auto-completed answers as you type, you might see your business already here if so select it, it not then click next.

Next, you’ll be asked if you want to add a location that customers can visit or if you’ll be having face-to-face interactions with customers. This location will show up on Google Maps and Search when customers are looking for your business

3. Choose your business category

The next option is to choose your business category, it’s important to ensure you select the correct one. Google will start to auto-complete this as you type. It’s a great idea to take a look at some of your competitors and see which option they have all selected.

4. Complete your Google My Business Verification

Once all the business details have been complete Google will now need to verify that you own this business and there are several methods of verification you can choose from.

Verification is a 2-step process so ensure you don’t change any of the business details during this process.

Verify by Postcard

Google will send you a 5 digit code on a postcard and this usually arrives within 14 days. Once received you can log in to your Google My Business account and select “Verify Now”.

Verify by Phone

Some businesses will have the option to verify by phone. This involves receiving an automated message to the business phone number with a code. Once received you can enter the code to verify

Verify by Email

Again, this is a similar process to phone, if available you’ll have the option to verify by email where you will receive the code by email.

Most people would be choosing to verify by postcard in most instances and this is easy to do.

If for any reason you don’t receive a code you can request it.

5. Optimising your Google My Business Listing

Once verified, you can start to explore some of the features available within GMB and start optimising your listing.

On the left-hand side, there are many options to select where you can update to improve and optimise your listing. It’s a good idea to spend some time taking a look at these. Here are some of the highlights.

Photos

You can add photos relevant to your business, services, products and internal or external images of your business. Make sure these photos are good quality and a widescreen format (16:9) is usually a great option to go with. You can also add your logo and any videos here.

Google My Business Posts

Here you can add posts regarding news, offers, events or products. If you add posts to Facebook or your website blog, make sure to also add them here. You can add a call to action button to these posts, which is a great feature.

Services

Here you add sections to describe any services you offer.

Google Reviews

You can manage all of your Google Reviews. You’ll also have a short link that you can provide to your customer so they can leave you a review.

Insights

A very useful tool for tracking your GMB metrics and seeing how many people visit your website, how many called you or asked for directions etc.

Google My Business App

You can use the app to update posts, photos, information and use the insights.
